Water Safety During Heat Wave
An uptick of drownings have occurred during this early season heat wave. The well above average temperatures are expected to continue through this week.
As you head to the pool or beach to cool off, remember these important safety tips.
1. Don’t go into the water (or let your child into the water) if you do not know how to swim.
2. Never swim alone.
3. Learn CPR and water rescue techniques.
4. Make sure the body of water matches your (or your child’s) swimming skill level. (EX: swimming in a pool is very different than swimming in a river)
5. Don’t underestimate the power of water. Even when a river or lake looks calm, they may have undertows.
6. Know what to do if you get caught in a current. Stay calm and float with the current or swim parallel to the shore until you can swim free.
7. Swim in areas supervised by a lifeguard.
8. Don’t push or jump on others in the water.
9. Don’t dive in unfamiliar areas or if you are not absolutely certain of the depth of water.
10. Never drink alcohol before or while swimming.
Never let children swim without watching them closely, no matter their skill level. Put the phone down!
If you are at a home with a pool, a public pool, a beach, or around any water in general, check the water FIRST if a child goes missing.
