Bitterly Cold Super Bowl 52

Minneapolis

If you’re headed to the Super Bowl in Minneapolis on Sunday, pack LOTS of layers! We all know Minnesota has some of the coldest winter weather around. But preparing for the biggest game of the year when it’s only in the single digits is brutal.

Native Minnesotans know how to properly dress for dangerously cold weather but those who don’t experience temperatures this cold very often may need a few reminders.

  • Dress in layers, beginning with a long sleeved base layer that allows your skin to breathe. Next, add a sweatshirt or fleece pullover. And finally, the outer layer should act as a windbreaker.
  • Wear a warm hat and scarf and make sure all exposed skin is covered. Ears, nose, fingers, and toes are most susceptible to frost bite.
  • Wear wool socks and insulated, waterproof boots.
  • Eat hot food and drink warm fluids.
  • Seek immediate medical attention at the first signs of frostbite. These include ice crystals forming on the skin, skin feeling warm prior to being defrosted, or skin turns pale, red, or white.

The National Weather Service in the Twin Cities has issued a special weather statement warning that extremely cold temperatures will contribute to wind chills below -10F from Saturday evening through Sunday night. Wind chills during this time could be as cold as -25F at times. Actual air temperatures during the game will only be in the upper single digits.

Bottom line: DRESS WARM! If you’re visiting Minneapolis from a warmer climate it is very important to remember that temperatures and wind chills can be dangerous if you are not properly dressed. Frostbite can occur quickly in these conditions.

Stay safe and enjoy the game!
