Biography

I live near Cape Cod, MA, and have also lived in FL, VA, & CA. Over the years I have had an active interest in storms and weather. My interest was started by my mother who was also a storm chaser, Red Cross Disaster volunteer and an EMT. My father was a Director at NOAA/NMFS and so it seems weather has always played a part in my life. I do a small bit of storm chasing (mostly hurricanes and snow storms), have attended SKYWARN training, am a weather spotter for a local news channel, and volunteer with the Red Cross during hurricanes.

When younger and living in Merritt Island, Fl we not only had a few brushes with hurricanes but also we had a tornado come through our neighborhood, causing a lot of damage. I remember that the water in our pool was all but gone, my swing set was in our neighbors yard (what was left of it) and yet our house was lucky and left unscathed.

A few years after that we were living in Northern VA and when returning from a road trip we saw the tornados in the distance...looking like they were dangerously close to the townhouse complex we lived at. Once again our house was spared, but a number of our close neighbors in the next buildings lost the roof from their house or worse. My best friend had her back broken by flying debris. Luckily she was not paralysed but did spend six months in a full body cast.

Then after moving up to MA and living on Buzzards Bay in Marion, MA we lost everything when the 6 foot storm surge from Hurricane Bob washed our house away in 1991. I have video of the storm and the waves breaking over our house. We lost everything except for one vehicle and our pets.

Despite the destruction I've witnessed I still love to be out in the weather and there is normally some sort of weather site open in at least one window on my computer. Just yesterday we had a freak storm which created what was first throught to be a tornado less then a mile from my house. I was outside through the whole storm, including the quarter sized hail, under a well staked awning. I'm not completely crazy (LOL), I had actually been way out back on out 20 acre property and the storm came up so fast I didn't have a chance to get in the house before the hail came. I took a few pictures which WPRI channel 12 news used in both their evening news program and also on the front page of their website at wpri.com. Today I have heard that the NWS thinks it may have been a microburst. It was pretty wild whatever it was!
