Moorhead, IA Tornado - Direct Hit - June 11, 2008SevereStudios.com Chasers Kory Hartman and Kenny Allen sustain a direct hit from a tornado between Little Sioux and Moorhead, IA while streaming LIVE video. Full 5:25 video NOW AVAILABLE! Do not attempt this. Ever. We should be dead. NOTE From Kory: You can now see and hear what decisions were made before, during, and after our "encounter". After reviewing the tape, it seems we caught the tornado as it was hitting the Boy Scout ranch, or directly thereafter (at :41 seconds in). Some have asked us why there wasn't more screaming and profanity during the clip shown on TV. All I can say is our 10 years of chasing experience and our 15 years broadcasting experience kept us from letting loose while Kenny was giving a live report. Read Kenny's Account of the chase --------------------- The live audio and video provided by Kenny Allen to WOWT-TV in Omaha can be found here. As you can see and hear, Kenny is giving a report that they are being hit by a tornado, but the live video is delayed by about 90 seconds. So, the live audio report is faster than the video. We are working to bring you the full "aircheck" of our live video and audio with WOWT-TV. This "aircheck" will show how SevereStudios works to inform the public of dangers in real time. Analysis of this video shows the left to right motion of entering the tornado, the core of the tornado, then right to left motion. The tornado had a classic counter-clockwise rotation. This is very evident on the video. SevereStudios will be working with the National weather Service and other chasers to complete a case study featuring this video. Four main factors contributed to this extraordinary situation: SevereStudios.com team member and chaser Ben Holcomb, who was nowcasting for the team, lost cell contact with Kory and Kenny and was unable to warn them in time of the shifting of the rotation. The SevereStudios team storm chasers never put themselves intentionally in danger. With over ten years of spotting and chasing experience, Kory Hartman and Kenny Allen have never had the unfortunate experience as on June 11th, 2008. Over the last few days, Kory Hartman and Kenny Allen have given multiple interviews to national media. They tried to explain that even with all the proper tools and experience, predicting what nature is going to do is inherently challenging. We must realize that predictions are just that, predictions. When the eyes and ears are right on the situation, the ground truth will always be the final deciding factor in any process. Especially with this event, some unfortunate decisions were made that ultimately landed them in the wrong place at the wrong time. The SevereStudios team have tried to emphasize that the National Weather Service and the leaders at the Little Sioux Scout Ranch did everything they could to warn people and take shelter. The tornado warning was issued a full 10 minutes before the camp was hit. The warnings were announced and people took cover, but ultimately the tornado caused horrific damage and claimed lives. This Iowa tornado
I read some people had a problem with the cussing... well this stuff is real, not Hollywood where they edit it. Yes these guys were very forunate to live thru this crap.
Video..
Sounds like you're referring to the tornado video from David Drummond from Nebraska in 2004. He had the firetruck and drove right into a tornado in the RFD that had spun up, and it blew out a good number of windows in his car.
Direct hits
I've actually seen a worse looking "drive thru the core" video than this one filmed by an amatuer couple several years ago.
I think they were in Oklahoma and the tornado (which had to be somewhere in the EF-1 range of this tornado given that they didn't get rolled either) was massively full of dust and pretty dropped right on top of them. To make matters worse, it was headed in the about the same direction and about the same speed so they were in it for a long time - even passing an occupied fire truck that got caught on the side of the road. When they finally escaped from it the outside views of what they were driving thru looked horrific.
If I find the link again I'll send it.
Just Curious
If you could see the direction which the debris and tree limbs were coming from why did you turn that direction? Not hating but just curious as to your mind state at the moment? A similar incident happened to myself in 2004 but I wasn't driving and had repeatly said to stop and not go through the circulation. That entire incident caused mass drama in the chasing community and I opted to continue chasing without taking part of the circle jerk but the videos are very similar and pretty amazing.
You both should be commended for how you handled the situation both during and after but had that one question as to why you turned south when the debris was clearly coming from that direction and realizing you were in and under the circulation you didn't opt to instead back up or head north?
Man, oh man!
Absolutely, incredible!
5:15 into the video
Dear Kory,
Your commentary towards the end of your video was rather disturbing! We've never heard Jay Trobec, exclaim "F**k me in the Ass" while reporting weather. :)
Keep up the good work!!!
Sarah & Mike Deakins :)
Note from Moderator: I don't think Dr. Jay has ever been IN a tornado. Otherwise I think he'd say something similar.
Amazing
Absolutely amazing, I'm kinda mad that you guys stole my world-famous "Oh F*** me in the ass" line, but the adrenaline pumping through you guys must have been the most amazing thing.
I think I would have said worse then just "F*** me in the ass".
You guys have my respect, you are really, no words can describe it. You guys are heroes.
Amazing
Kenny and Kory,
Amazing video and even more amazing both of you came out of this physically OK. I knew when I talked to you right after, that you were shaken up. I can understand even more now after viewing this video. Kory, I must say for once, I am glad I did not catch up with you sooner as planned to "enjoy" the chase together. I am glad to say I was southwest of you.
You guys are true professionals and prove that you don't have to scream and curse the whole time when things go bad and the situations are intense. You proved this as you were going through it, emphasizing that all the people in the path needed to take shelter immediately. Outstanding!
I am making my donation to the Scout Relief Fund. I will be there to help whenever it is needed. This is a worthwhile cause and will make the drive from Alabama worthwhile.

Great Work
Wow...have to say great work there
Mr. Allen. I have not had an opportunity to review the footage on here, but by the way it looks, from the still frames, I was watching this live as well last week.
Keep up the great work. It's good to see you doing well!
Congrats on what you have accomplished!
Wow.
This video is simply amazing. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It's a very captivating video, with hopefully some useful information for the NWS. Not the kind of luck you're hoping for when you're out chasing...I'm glad you guys made it out safely.
